PNHS Foundation Feature: Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida

After the 2024 Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the PNHS Foundation awarded grants to 41 therapeutic riding centers, equine rescues, and equine-assisted service programs. As we look ahead to the 2025 show, we’re excited to highlight the incredible work of these recipient organizations!

Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida (EATSF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit therapeutic horsemanship program that was founded in 1982 by Soroptimist International of Boca Raton and the Kiwanis Club of Boca Raton. Today, EATSF works towards its mission of providing therapeutic riding and equine activities to children and adults with special needs so that they may improve physically, mentally, and emotionally.

How does Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida serve your community?

“We serve our community by offering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where individuals with special needs can engage in meaningful, goal-oriented equine-assisted programs. Our services promote personal growth, enhance independence, and build confidence through the unique connection between horse and rider. Since 1982, we’ve been a trusted resource in South Florida, partnering with families, schools, and local organizations to make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.”

What are some of the biggest challenges your organization currently faces?

“One of the biggest challenges Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida (EATSF) currently faces is meeting the growing demand for our services. We have a significant waitlist, reflecting the strong and increasing need for equine-assisted programs in our community. Unfortunately, our ability to expand is limited by both capacity and resources.

“A key factor is the current state of our horse herd. Many of our equine partners are nearing retirement. We are actively working to acquire new horses that are suitable for our programs, and each new addition requires extensive training and acclimation to ensure they are well-prepared for the structure of therapeutic sessions. These horses are the heart of what we do, and investing in their readiness is essential to serving more individuals safely and effectively.”

How has this grant impacted your program’s ability to serve your community?

“The grant from the Pennsylvania National Horse Show has significantly enhanced EATSF’s ability to serve our community by supporting the care and training of our newest equine partner, Zander. He began his 90-day trial with us in January, and thanks to this funding, we were able to provide him with the care and training necessary for a successful transition into therapeutic work. Grants like this are essential in helping us expand our herd with well-prepared, reliable horses directly impacting on the number of participants we can serve and the quality of our programming.”

Can you share a success story of a horse or participant who benefited from your program?

“Zander is a shining success story at EATSF! After retiring from his career as a jumper pony, he joined us in January for a 90-day trial period. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he had the temperament and heart for therapeutic work. He passed his trial with flying colors and quickly became a beloved member of our herd.

“Zander began participating in classes soon after his arrival. His calm demeanor, willingness to engage, and love of attention have made him a favorite among staff, volunteers, and participants alike. Most notably, Zander was brought on to help revitalize our Hippotherapy program, and he has embraced that mission with enthusiasm. His presence has already made a meaningful impact on the individuals he works with, and we are excited about the continued role he will play in helping participants grow and thrive.”

What future goals do you have for your program and how can additional support help?

“One of our future goals is to continue growing our herd, which is essential to meeting the high demand for our programs. Each new horse allows us to reach more individuals who can benefit from equine-assisted therapies, especially as we work to reduce our waitlist and strengthen programs.

“Ongoing support is critical to this mission. It helps us not only acquire new horses, but also provide the ongoing care, training, and resources necessary to ensure they are healthy, happy, and well-prepared for the therapeutic work they do. Additional support can deepen our impact and bring healing, growth, and connection to even more members of our community.”

Is there anything else you’d like donors/grant supporters to know about the impact of their support?

“Their generosity truly makes a difference! Every cent directly impacts the lives of our participants and the horses. Individuals with special needs are gaining confidence, building strength, and experiencing joy through the unique bond they share with our equine partners.

“Your support helps us create a space where ability is celebrated, progress is possible, and every small victory is a big win. Whether it’s welcoming a new horse like Zander or expanding our programs to serve more individuals, your support is the foundation of everything we do. Thank you for being such an important part of the EATSF family and mission!”
